Change of director

We decided to change director because James wan is know for horrors and not necessarily thrillers. We feel he wouldn't depict the genres style as well because he may not show off the visual elements as well. We needed a director that has experience with thrillers and in turn would generate buzz and hype for our film we chose David fincher as our new director as he has directed films such as .... This is why we feel he would be a better director than James wan

Todorovs Theory

Todorov's Theory is that most narratives or plot lines follow the same pattern or path. There are five steps to this pattern which are shown above.

The first stage: Equilibrium is the start of the narrative where the characters are displayed everything seems to be good at the start and no problems are revealed and everything is how it should be.

The second stage: Disruption of the Equilibrium is when the happiness at the beginning has been interrupted. 

The third stage: The recognition of the disruption is when the part of the plot where everyone recognises the disruption which can cause chaos.

The fourth stage: An attempt to repair the damage is where the characters attempt to restore any disruption or problems.

The fifth stage: Is where the problems have all be resolved and normality can return.

Importance Of Target Audiences

It's importance to get the target audience right in the making of our film. Target audiences help as you need them to appeal to the right ages but at the same time make sure their appropriate for some viewing audiences as there are some age restrictions on some films, especially with our genre Thriller.
Our genre normally has the age certificate of an age rating of 15-18. This depends on the explicit language, violence, disturbing scenes and also sex scenes which can be common in most films.

our film will be certificated as 15, as we feel any age below this may not understand the complexity of our narrative as well as someone this age and over. Also we can have some mild distressing scenes and also mild language, but as our film is not a horror we don't need to include really explicit content as some horrors on the other hand do. Our film is also not as scary as some thrillers as its psychological its more focusing on the narrative and also has a crimey feel to it and most crime films aren't normally over the age rating of 15 either.

Importance Of Cinematography

The closer the shot is the more emotive affect it has on the audience.
There are many different shots that you can use when filming and these reflect the message or affect you want. For our genre Thriller there are specific camera shots angles needed to convey its stylistic and tense, eerie atmosphere.

Long shot:

It's used to establish where the shot has taken place. It gives an indication to the action giving the piece a clearer narrative. With the thriller genre this is key as we need to have some idea as to where the setting is an it can create a creepy atmosphere.

Point of view shot:

This is used to get a sense of how the character would be seeing everything as you see it from their perspective. This is another key factor a thriller title sequence needs to include because you may be seeing things for example from a murders perspective, this adds tension and also helps to convey the message.

Extreme close up:

This shot is used to pay particular detail to something and to also make whatever is being shown as in as much detail as it possibly can. It complements the thriller genre as it needs to add suspense and keep the audience questioning a certain shots importance.

The Importance Of Typography

 TYPOGRAPHY 

Typography is important for our title sequences as it conveys a specific meaning or feeling. The typography has to generate to the audience clearly an idea behind the narrative or even the style of the film or genre. The purpose of it is to translate a message virtually, if the typography does not convey the right message for the film idea.

We are going to be using the website DA font to find our chosen typography. We want it to represent our genre and style in the best way possible. 

Television programme of a similar genre: True Detective

The title sequence I have decided to look at is True Detective which is a Television series.

The Title sequence True Detective evolves around the genre: crime/ Psychological and mystery. The Television program is about the lives of two detectives, Rust Cohle and Martin Hart, become entangled during a 17-year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana. 

The parts of the title sequence I liked the most were the cinematography as the camera seems to pan backwards and forwards creating motion for the piece which I felt was really effective and I may incorporate the same effect and motion into my title sequence. I really like how the images that are shown in the title sequence are very artistic and abstract as buildings and industrial looking sights are used to shape the head of a person. The cleverness about this is it hides the person’s identity and gives us a scene of setting which is mis en scene. I like the creativity and it creates questions and the answers you will have to find out when watching the television series. This is how I want the audience to feel when watching my title sequence. The sound used in the title sequence is very prominent in the whole piece it sounds country and American suggesting where it’s set, it’s not a sinister sound meaning it’s not going to be a horror but has a sense of vague suspicion creating a mysterious mood.

Film Of A Similar Genre: Insidious

The title sequence for the film insidious is a thriller/ mystery, horror. The film is about a family looking to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further. The title sequence starts with the sound being very eery music which creates the tension and atmosphere of creepiness and fear for the audience.

 The typography comes up very slowly and almost moves off the page like a whisper giving a very cold appearance. The background is dark and gray scale throughout the only colour present that isn't dark is red which symbolizes blood/death and horror. I like the fact they use the red colour to symbolism the red door which suggests it’s going to feature as an important role in the film. This is what I like about the title sequence I like the mystery and question.

 In my title sequence for my film I want to add this mystery by focusing on an image or object the same as insidious does without giving too much about the film away. The setting / mis en scene for the title sequence is an empty house and the lighting is very dim and low which is a typical representation of a horror film. I am going to use a lot of the features in my title sequence as they work well together to create a dramatic and interesting effect.

Analysis: Title Sequence The Game

The title sequence The Game starts off with the screen appearing with loads of puzzle pieces before the main part of the title sequence is shown. The puzzle pieces could suggest that there is a sense of mystery in the film and like a puzzle there is something that is going to be solved. There is a lot of connotations to water in the title sequence. We see 3 boats being pushed along in the water by some little children. Also we see a young boy being pushed into the lake which suggests this could be a main feature in the film or that there could be a issue involving water. 

All the way through the title sequence we are shown a young boys birthday party in a garden which we assume is his as we see a big estate house at the bottom of it and at the door of the estate stands the young boy we see at the start standing with a older man we presume is his father. We see the man that is standing with the boy start to walk slowly away from him. This tells me that the man we suppose is his father will have maybe left him when he was a young boy. At the very end of the title sequence the camera quickly cuts to a man in his bathroom again with water being a main object splashing his face to wake him self up which could suggest he has just woken up and he was dreaming or having flash blacks about all the things happening in the title sequence. We understand that the man hasn't had the best child hood and he may either have a fear of water or associates it with bad events that have happened in his families past. I like the title sequence as it leaves you asking  a lot of questions as to why certain elements have been repeated and we know from the very start that there is a sense of suspicion and mystery.

Analysis: Title Sequence Zombie-Land

The opening title sequence of zombie land non-diegetic sound has been used, this heavy dramatic music builds up excitement for the viewer, the music is all suitable to what is being portrayed visually as the opening is showing a sequence of human being attacked by zombies. A slow motion effect has been used alongside the music which intensifies the excitement as the editing is the forcing the viewer to wait longer to discover what is going to happen, however this effect also creates impact and makes the attacks last longer than they are in reality. This gives a sense of the genre being action and thriller based due to the intensity of the build-up. 

The typography used for Zombie land resemble the location, this is due to them having a rusty metal appearance which looks similar to the signs portrayed in the background, the lettering is dark red which connotes death and blood, this indicates the audience that the film is going to consist of violence and gore. The fact the text is being shattered throughout each attack communicates to the audience that this film is about disruption of normality and an enigma is created as the audience are curious to discover whether or not humanity will overcome the zombies, this lures the audience into wanting to watch more.

A close up shot of a zombies face is then used simply to secure the fact that this creature is in fact a zombie, this is portrayed through an immense amount of blood spurting from the mouth, this not only allows the audience to discover that the massacre has begun but it also creates an emphasis on the special effects used in the film. However this image is contradicted through the weather, the expectations of a zombie thriller film would be stormy weather to resemble no hope, but due to the consistent high key lighting a happy mood is created which has a calm and relaxing feel of a sunny day, which suggests the film will not be as sinister as it is being made out to be and will consist of more positive themes. This could also be a way of foreshadowing that the survivors will overcome the zombies.Irony has been used also to provoke humor, as a man wearing a ‘the end is near’ sign is attacked by zombies, this suggests that the film will have a humorous element to it, and isn't your typical zombie horror film, designed to scare. In the background of this two people can be seen fleeing from the scene, this could foreshadow that there is going to be a theme of betrayal in the film as they are not even attempting to help the man, it also shows the loss of hope and desperation to survive.  A thick black cloud is view-able as a car is seen to be on fire, the black smoke connotes death and darkness which reveals to the audience the man being chased is going to get killed. The car however is an earthy brown colour which resembles naturalness this could portray that the last of natural elements is being destroyed and the fact it is on fire shows that is has been taken over by evil, as fire resembles hell. A brief case with money pouring loose from within can be seen merging into the smoke which shows its worthlessness to survival and the loss of civilization as the world potentially lives on money and now it is been portrayed as a useless factor.

Analysis: Title Sequence Se7en

The Title Sequence from the crime/psychological thriller Se7en, presents itself as a dark psychological and truly tense atmospheric piece. from the start you find yourself questioning what the film is going to be about.

The title sequence starts with a close up shot of a book; this creates a scene of mystery as nobody knows what the book contains. The camera is mostly placed at a high angle shot looking down on the book revealing what’s written on the pages and showing pictures people that appear to look tortured most inflicted with wounds relaying that fact that there is possibly going to be gore and murderous occurrences in the film. We also see close ups of certain words that are being blocked out by black pen but are half recognizable without looking very closely at the shot as it runs at a fast pace from each shot. The words that are revealed are words such as Homosexual that suggests the mystery person is possibly a psychopath as everything the person does is blocking out people’s faces and words that look like sections from religious prophesies and in a newspaper cutting he specifically removes the word God. It suggests that people have been murdered in the film or are going to be murdered. It also suggests there are religious references throughout due to the religious connotations. Everything shown keeps the audience guessing they could be seen as clues all the different paper clipping the person is seeming to be collecting and adding to what could be a diary or portfolio. There are no long shots in the Title Sequence so this doesn't allow the viewer to see what’s fully going on, reinforcing the fear of the unknown and the mystery of it. Everything in the Title Sequence is only seen from the villains view point so we are looking at the whole thing through his or her eyes.

In this Title Sequence, like what to expect from the film and the overall tone it puts across, which is ominous The lighting in this extract is very dark adding to the ominous tone throughout and there are shadows which could be perceived as someone moving about which keeps the viewer on edge and creates tension. The colours used are very dull and usually consist of brown, grey and black. You can see the words being highlighted in black pens connoting death and bad things. The objects used such as blades and needles make the viewer’s feel uncomfortable and make more of a dark mood, like the shot of the person cutting with a blade their own finger prints off so they can’t be revealed is obviously something someone who has something to hide and could be seen as mentally unstable could be like.

The credits show throughout and the typography help define the genre as they are messy and flicker on the screen, the credits flickering makes the viewer think of the flickering light bulb is about to run out of light, which creates a sense of foreboding. Most of the images shown look as if they’re being doubled but they are blurred, which connotes to the audience that the person that is and the opening sequence is not mentally stable and doesn't see things too clearly.The sound used in the clip, is non digetic but some sounds are made to sound natural. For example, sometimes in this clip, a very high pitched noise occurs which tricks the viewers into thinking its someone screaming, which connotes that there is going to be some kind of attack in the film but it’s all going to circulate around the topic of danger and someone desperate for help and sets the audience up for what’s going to be coming up in the rest of the film. The background music is heavy sounding and is quite fast throughout and carry’s a constant tempo that doesn't really change. This is typical of a thriller movie as it creates suspense.

Codes and Conventions Of A Title Sequence

A Title sequence is the method by which cinematic films or television programs present their key credit productions and cast members, or both, whilst utilizing conceptual visuals and sound. The opening credits of a film are shown at the beginning and list the most important members of the cast and also of the production. They can be put onto black plain screens, onto still images and even moving action. The accompanying music in the background is the soundtrack for the film which, adds to the mood that the film or program is trying to portray.

They should include: production companies, director, producer, top billing actors and film title, as shown below...
