changing writing position

We decided to show our change in the position our typography is placed in for our title sequence. We got feedback from the class that having the writing in the center made your attention only focus on the typography rather than the image. 

Having the typography then placed at the right or left side of the frame makes it easier to see whats happening in the image but is still in a position where its easier to see. 

Also a lot of other title sequences we have watched place there typography in different places and the center of the image doesn't normally tend to be the option.

Typography Changing Again

We have decided to change the typography from what we last chose. We have decided this as members of my class had different opinions on whether they felt it fitted our genre thriller or more the genre horror. The writing was quite distorted and creepy looking, maybe too creepy for our films narrative. We felt that the attention was taken away from our filming because of the style of the font. Having a more plainer and less in your face typography will keep the audience engaged more in what is being shown in the title sequence.

Title: Six Small Bones

Title Sequences to look at for ideas

These are some examples of some title sequences that we liked in terms of their design elements such as, typography, sound or cinematography. We will use some of these specific elements in our title sequence when we make it to convey the conventions of a thriller and also bring elements from either horrors, or crime films to give it a different feeling to the common thriller.

These title sequences include, insidious, true detective, taken, and se7en.

Chosen Typography

The feedback we got from the class on the typography sheet we passed round, was that they preferred the typography at the bottom of the page. They said they could see it fitting well with our genre thriller and that it was appealing and bold which is what you want for the title and credits in a title sequence.

We think this typography works much better than the others we could have chosen from. The other typography looked as if it fitted more into the horror genre, it was a little bit too scary looking for our film we don't want to sell it as containing gore or scares. We want our credits and title not to take away the attention from our imagery moving behind it as we have chosen to have the typography not on blank black backgrounds but on the images themselves. Therefore we wanted the typography to be bold and clear enough to read so we feel this font is best for it and its still got an element of distorting to the lettering which still makes it interesting. Here in the picture above you see the font as the title at the end of the title sequence.

Music Choice

We have chosen the music for our soundtrack out of the four choices we had on audio network. We asked our class mates opinions and there was a majority vote towards one of the tracks called: Forbidden Forest.

This is the website audio network where we have been told to find our soundtrack for our title sequence.

We have picked four different soundtracks that we think fit the genre quite well. All the pieces of music add a sense of suspense and eeriness. 
The first track is Forbidden land followed by forbidden forest, arachnophobia and lost in the dark.

Typography Options

These are some examples of Typography choices that we think will be best for our title sequence. We are going to pass round a sheet in class tomorrow and see what our class mates prefer. The chosen Typography will become the final choice for our piece. 

Costumes/ props

Costumes for our film will be minimal the only piece of costume we will be using is a pair of boots that will be shown walking along my hallway in my house and also in my garden along the grass to suggest to the audience the change in setting.

However we will be using more props instead as our title sequence is going to be made up of imagery more than anything else.

Location

The location for our filming is going to be filmed for parts at school and in other parts at my house. 

We are going to use the school as their is a lot of outside areas where we can film and also we can use class rooms to film in especially the drama department will be great use for filming most things as the walls in the drama room are totally black. This will make the filming more effective for our genre especially. 

I will be filming at my house also to give the film a setting showing that parts are set in a home i can use items in my home to depict the setting.

Cast Roles Being Changed

We made some changes to our cast in terms of which actor/ actress played which of our characters in our story. We felt that one of our actors needed to switch roles with another as they maybe wouldn't depict the role as well as they haven't played similar roles in any other films they had been in. We had Leonardo DiCaprio as the police man and Paul dano as the twin brother we had to switch their roles as Leonardo DiCaprio never has a small part in a film so we had to have him as a major role, this supports the amount of money we would need for our budget.

The Main Cast For Our Film

Courtney Cox, is going to play the mother in our film. We decided to pick Courtney Cox for this role as she has been in all 4 scream films and knows the thriller/ horror genre well, so we thought she would be able to adapt to this role easily.

Paul Dano, is going to play both the Father that dies at the beginning of our film and also he is going to play the antagonist the villain in our film the twin brother.We picked him for this role because he played a similar role in Prisoners as he was accused of abducting two girls he was psychopathic in the film and we need him to act similar in our film.













Leonardo DiCaprio, is going to play the main investing detective/ police officer leading the case to find the missing boy. We thought he would be good at playing this role as he is always a leading man in films and also he has been in psychological films such as Inception and Shutter Island. 

Imagery Ideas For Title Sequence

These are some of the Images we will be wanting to show in our title sequence. These images all fit in well with the genre the graveyard is always associated with thrillers. It brings along with it the connotations of death and decay and that one of the aspects we may want to feature in our title sequence. The other image is of a woodland or Forrest the look the trees give gives of a creepy and eerie look creating at moments suspense. The last picture is the shot of inside a house, this could be used in our title sequence to show setting and to also add mystery as to why we see inside or end up at this certain location.

Applying Todorov's theory to our Film Idea

Equilibrium
The audience will see a funeral taking place; it will be the father of a young boy called Morgan, leaving his wife as a widow. This has happened 2 years prior to the mother and her new boyfriend taking her son on holiday to Canada where the story starts. Morgan has gone to look around the area and is gone for two hours. The mother of Morgan goes out to look for him as he’s not returned home. As she heads out she is stopped unable to search because of the break out of a fire in the Forest nearby.

Disruption
Missing posters are put up as he hasn't been found. The forensics team find six small bones in among-st the destroyed Forest; the bones have no fire damage. We are shown a man digging up the remains of a child’s grave and planting the bones in the forest and starting the fire. This is Morgan’s uncle the Twin brother his Father never even knew he had. Later the mother sees a picture of her son and a man who looks exactly like her husband in a local paper and she informs the police wanting answers.

Resolution
The man in the newspaper she believes is her husband cannot be her husband as the police confirm he really has died but they identify a different in the men a missing scar under is right eye. They go back through her husband’s history to reveal he has a twin brother that was put into care when he was too young to remember him.  

New Equilibrium 
The film of him being question cuts off so you are unable to hear his answer and it’s left with no clear resolution.

Restored order
They eventually are able to track the twin brother down and take him to the station to be questioned, saving Morgan and returning safely home.

Inspiration for Our Film Narrative

The inspiration for our film came from researching famous missing cases that have to this day never been solved. We became interested in the strange mysterious stories that we read and one called the Sodder Family Mystery caught our eye. These 5 children and their parents on Christmas eve were asleep after a family party, where in the middle of the night their mother realized the house was on fire. When the children father went to rescue the children from their bedrooms their ladder was missing. Days after the fire their ladder was found at a near by embankment.After the fire the children who were believed to have died in the fire was later speculated that they may have been kidnapped instead. This is because when they looked at the wreckage in the fire they found bones with no fire damage indicating they could have been dug up from a grave an planted their. This case has never been solved. 

We really found this story incredibly compelling and became interested about the information of the supposed kidnapping and the bones being found with no fire damage created a sense of a great start for a narrative of our own. We want to create a film idea including some kind of kidnapped and one that includes a lot of questions that haven't been answered, this is what inspired us to make our film and call it six small bones as it will evolve around bones being found creating the inner mystery for our film.

Why We Chose The Genre Psychological Thriller

Psychological Thriller?
The genre that we have chosen for our Title Sequence is, 'psychological Thriller'. We believe we can invent an original, unique and creative narrative for our Title Sequence using some of the genres well known stylistic elements. Many Psychological Thrillers that have already been made have been very successful in gaining audience interest. The genre 'Thriller' and its close comparative genre 'Horror', capture their audiences with their high tension, suspense and mystery. 

         Film Genre: Psychological Thriller

We want to captive our audience in the same way, by making the pace of the filming fit the level of mystery and suspense we want it to adopt. We will use slow motion, to get that eerie and unpleasant feeling. Imagery will be the main focus of our Title Sequence used to get the audience to piece what's shown in the title sequence together to have a guess at the films narrative, however we will leave a lot of questions unanswered so the audience will want to find out in the film what the answers to the clues are.

Introduction To AS Media Coursework

For my Media Studies AS Coursework, We have been appointed the task of working with another member of our class where we will begin formulating ideas for the production of a title sequence.Once we have decided the genre of our film, we can then begin researching all the elements that are needed. We will look at different title sequence designers for inspiration and then focus on the key features title sequences contain such as, typography, soundtrack and cinematography.My blog will be displaying the whole process into the making of our title sequence. It will focus on research into our chosen genre, films that already exist in this genre, our chosen narrative and the process of editing and filming.
